The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a major solar rooftop initiative aimed at delivering free electricity to one crore Indian households. This scheme not only promotes renewable energy but also supports financial relief for middle- and lower-income families.

  • Target: One crore eligible homes will receive rooftop solar systems.
  • Monthly Benefit: Each beneficiary household can get up to 300 units of free electricity per month, reducing or eliminating power bills.
  • Direct Subsidy:
    • 60% subsidy for systems up to 2 kW
    • 40% for the 2–3 kW range
    • Maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 per household
  • Net Metering: Households can sell excess power to the electricity grid and earn additional income.
  • Direct Bank Transfer (DBT): Subsidy amount is transferred directly to the user’s bank account.

  • The applicant must be a resident of India.
  • Property ownership or legal authorization to install solar panels on the rooftop.
  • Must be a domestic consumer under a recognized DISCOM (electricity distributor).
  • Only approved vendors listed on the official portal are allowed for installation.

  1. Visit: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in
  2. Register with your State, Electricity Board, Consumer Number, Mobile Number, and Email ID.
  3. Wait for feasibility approval from DISCOM.
  4. Choose an authorized vendor and install the system.
  5. Apply for net-metering after installation.
  6. Submit installation details and bank information for subsidy disbursal.
  7. Receive subsidy within 30 days into your bank account.
